National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will commence a 1080 ground and aerial baiting program on the 24th March 2025 to the 22nd June 2025 on the following reserves:

The operations will use meat baits containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of wild dogs and foxes. Signs will be placed at the entry to all the baiting locations. Domestic pets are not permitted in NPWS managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting locations. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Safety alerts: Speed limits within park

Vehicle access in Boonoo Boonoo NP is restricted to a maximum of 40km/h throughout the park, and some areas with shared pedestrian access are restricted to 10km/h. Gravel roads can become slippery at times, particularly in wet weather, so please exercise caution and adhere to the sign-posted limits.

National Parks are closed from 10.00am 06th March to 10.00am 8th April due to the damage associated with the impact of Tropical Cyclone Alfred. Penalties apply for non-compliance.

Closed areas: Cambridge Plateau Forest Drive closed March 24 to April 17

 

Cambridge Plateau Forest Drive will be closed for works from Monday 24 March to Thursday 17 April 2025 due to road repair works.

The following facilities will be closed for the duration

Mount Babyl trail and tower area will be accessible from the north only. Permission for access via the Bruxner Highway during works must be sought from the ranger through the NPWS Kyogle Office.

The private Airbnb cabin off Cambridge Plateau Forest Drive will not be accessible via Cambridge Plateau Forest Drive for the duration of the closure, contact the owner for more information.

There will be no access to Peacock Creek campground via Cambridge Plateau Forest Drive until the road re-opens. Please use Iron Pot Creek Road, Sextonville Road or Peacock Creek Road.

Safety alerts: Peacock Creek campground access changed

Access to Peacock Creek campground has changed due to deterioration of local roads following the impacts of Cyclone Alfred. See below best options to access the campground whilst repairs and upgrades take place on local roads:

  1. Iron Pot Creek Road via Kyogle (north) - All weather best access is from Kyogle via Afterlee Road to the Dam Access Road, then a left turn onto Brays Road, right turn onto Logan's Bridge Road, right turn onto Iron Pot Creek Road. Follow signs to Bonalbo once on Brays Road.
  2. Cambridge Plateau Forest Drive via Bruxner Highway (south) - best access when open, 2WD suitable in dry weather only. Intermittently closed during periods of wet weather. *closed until April 17 due to repair works, check relevant alert for more details.
  3. Sextonville Road via Summerland Way (east) - suitable for 4WDs only, badly damaged with large pot holes and deep ruts. Repair works soon to commence, check for alerts.
  4. Peacock Creek Road via Clarence way (west) - 4WD only, not recommended for towing. Two steep creek crossings not suitable for 2WD/AWD, narrow weed affected road sections, badly damaged with large pot holes. 

Drivers advised to drive to conditions, check NPWS website alerts before visiting and follow all signage instructions at road works. For more information, contact the NPWS Kyogle area office on 02 6632 0000.

Closed areas: Border Loop Lookout closed for roadworks

The Border Loop Lookout and walking track will be closed to all visitors to allow for essential roadworks on the Lions Road.

The Lions Road will be closed to all visitors between Standfield's Bridge at Cougal and the Queensland border.

Closed areas: Road closure

Some areas of this park are closed until further notice due to the demolition of a bridge from a past flooding event.

The closed areas include the 4WD access to North Washpool, an area also known as Washpool rest area, entering from Baryulgil onto Collum Collum Road. The bridge is washed away at the junction of Washpool Creek and Collum Collum Road.

Please note:

  • Washpool National Park’s 2WD entrance off Gwydir Highway onto Coachwood Drive and Washpool Forest Way is open.
  • Bellbird campground, Coombadjha campground and the Granites lookout and picnic areas are accessible.

Closed areas: Toonumbar Forest Drive & Coxs Road Closure

Toonumbar Forest Drive and Coxs Road are closed until winter 2025. Estimated re-opening date is June following completion of maintenance works. 

Both roads are not safely trafficable in wet conditions and are therefore seasonally closed from late spring until late autumn dependant on rainfall during the wet season. There may also be additional closures during forecast weather events and damage during the winter period.

This closure will affect the following areas:

  • Murray Scrub Lookout
  • Sherwood Lookout

Iron Pot Creek Campground and Murray Scrub Walking track can be accessed via Murray Scrub Road.
