Overview

Goonoo National Park was created in December 2005. It covers an area of 9090ha. View the detailed park and fire management documents.

About 35 km north-east of Dubbo, the park is a popular birdwatching hotspot and great for a tranquil day outdoors.

After a morning of exploration, stop for a bite to eat at the scenic Rileys Dam picnic area. Soak in the beauty of the majestic black cypress pine and casuarina woodland surrounds.

While offering a picturesque backdrop for a relaxing lunch, the park is also an important habitat for the critically endangered regent honeyeater and the endangered mallee fowl.

You might also spot glossy black cockatoos, often seen drinking at waterpoints after a day of foraging.

If you visit from September to November, you’ll be treated to colourful displays of donkey orchids. These vibrant flowers have orange and yellow petals with tints of white and purple.

Getting there

From Dubbo: Head north on the Newell Highway then exit right onto Burraway Street. This turns into Ulomongo Street and Mogriguy Road. Continue for about 13km then turn right onto Dubbo Street and Mogriguy Forest Road.

From Mendooran: Take Mendooran Road through Goonoo State Conservation Area, then turn onto Mogriguy Forest Road.

Please note

  • There’s no drinking water, so bring plenty with you.
  • Please drive cautiously on gravel roads, especially at dawn and dusk when animal activity is high.

These maps give a basic overview of park attractions and facilities, and may not be detailed enough for some activities. We recommend that you buy a topographic map before you go exploring.
