Koolewong Flora Reserve

View the detailed park and fire management documents for Koolewong Flora Reserve. The reserve lies in Darkinjung Country, near Wisemans Ferry and Mangrove Mountain. Part of the McPherson State Forest, it links up with a vast area of protected sandstone landscape on the Hornsby Plateau. 

Remote and rugged, Koolewong Flora Reserve has patches of wilderness that foster high levels of biodiversity. Located east of Yengo National Park and north of Dharug National Park, the reserve helps extend the protection offered by these parks. This includes wildlife corridors that run both east-west and north-south.

Koolewong Flora Reserve contains a wide variety of habitats, including bare rock terrain, moist gullies and dry sclerophyll forest with a rich understory of plants. Its varied landscape has the potential to host a diverse suite of native animals, especially in areas of the reserve least affected by human disturbance. It's home to a healthy population of vulnerable eastern pygmy-possums, and 24 other threatened native animal species have been recorded here.

About flora reserves

Flora reserves were established under the Forestry Act 2012 and remain State Forest. Under a unique management arrangement, this land is managed by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service. This is to ensure management is consistent with the adjoining national parks and reserves.
