Skylight cave
Kurnell area in Kamay Botany Bay National Park
Overview
Located near Cape Solander in the Kurnell area, Skylight cave is closed to visitors due to serious safety risks. The cave is mid-way down an unstable cliff, and the risk of falling off the cliff edge while trying to reach it makes it very dangerous.
Skylight cave is not an actual cave, but rather a small rock overhang formation.
It can only be accessed by following a dangerously-narrow cliff-top walk, then climbing down a steep and perilous rock face to eventually reach a rock platform. The rock platform itself is threatened by unstable cliff overhangs and waves sweep across it when there is large swell at most tides. This informal access track includes narrow and slippery sections, with a high risk of falling off the edge.
The cave ‘doorway’ is located along a very narrow section of the rock platform, with a sheer drop into the ocean.
Please do not risk your safety trying to reach this location. A fall from the cliff edge could lead to permanent injury or death, from either the fall itself or subsequent drowning in the treacherous sea below. There’s no lifeguard service nearby and access for emergency services is limited.
Visit Cape Solander and walk to Cape Baily lighthouse instead.
