Set on a sandstone plateau above a green carpet of eucalypt forest, Grand Canyon lookout offers uninterrupted views across Morton National Park. It’s only minutes from the Southern Highlands town of Bundanoon, where you can stock up on supplies before enjoying a picnic in the fresh air.

In the early morning, listen to the chorus of woodland birds and see wallabies hopping among the scrubby vegetation. It’s a great place to appreciate the heathland flowers that bloom in spring. You’ll see pink boronias, purple fuchsias and the aptly named egg and bacon plant, which features bright yellow flowers with a splash of red.

The easy Fern Glen walking track (15min return) is a great option for a stroll or bike ride. It takes you into cool rainforest, past gigantic king ferns. You’ll hear the pretty clicks and calls of lyrebirds and may even see them scratching at the edges of the walking track.

There are plenty of other walks nearby. Lovers walking track is an easy bushwalk through open forest, while Tooths walking track to Bundanoon Creek is a steep hike that ends at a beautiful swimming hole. If you’re staying the weekend, Gambells Rest campground is a popular spot with modern facilities.
