Sustaining the Willandra
The Sustaining the Willandra conservation program will help preserve the Willandra Lakes Region World Heritage Area’s significant geological, evolutionary and Aboriginal cultural heritage values for future generations. Incorporating local input, extensive mapping, monitoring and reporting, the program forms an essential step in sustaining and conserving this ancient land and culture.

Encompassing Mungo National Park with its ancient dry lakes, crescent dunes and arid environment, the Willandra Lakes Region World Heritage Area is an outstanding example of ongoing geological processes and major stages in the Earth’s evolutionary history.
Aboriginal people have lived here for millennia. Home of Mungo Lady and Mungo Man, the region bears an exceptional testimony to a past civilisation, and preserving these values for future generations is crucial.
NPWS’ Sustaining the Willandra program will help us do this. Incorporating extensive traditional and local knowledge input, the program will comprise widespread area mapping to chart the impact of the actions we undertake.
Our scientists will capture relevant scientific information and work with land managers and Traditional Owners to determine critical issues and how effectively they are being managed.
Following this, and working in partnership with Western Local Land Services and Willandra Lakes landholders, NSW National Parks will implement a monitoring, evaluation, reporting and improvement program to track the Country’s response.
