Closed areas: Parts of Blue Mountains National Park closed

Many roads, fire trails and walking tracks in Blue Mountains National Park are closed due to infrastructure upgrades or damage caused by wet weather including subsidence, rockfalls, landslides and fallen trees.

The following areas are closed:

Katoomba and Leura  

  • Narrow Neck Trail and Glenraphael Drive will be closed to vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles for road maintenance from Monday 16th of December to Friday 20th of December. Access to the Narrow Neck commercial recreation and public climbing areas are accessible via the Miners Track from Narrow Neck Lookout. 
  • Federal Pass is closed between Cooks Crossing (200m east of Furber Steps) and Giant Stairs due to a major rockfall. There's no access between Giant Stairs (below Three Sisters) and Scenic World Valley Stations or Furber Steps.  
  • Honeymoon Bridge is closed due to rockfall risk.
  • Prince Henry Cliff walk (part of Grand Cliff Top walk) is closed between Gordon Falls picnic area and Elysian Rock lookout, due to a landslide. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information. Detours will also be in place via Olympian Parade.
  • Fern Bower track between Prince Henry Cliff walk and Amphitheatre track is closed due to multiple landslides. Access to Leura Forest and Jamison Valley is via Amphitheatre track.
  • Ruined Castle, Golden Stairs, Solitary loop and Federal Pass, west of Scenic World are closed due to multiple landslides.
  • Lone Lyrebird track is closed between Gordon Road and the War Memorial, due to subsidence. Detour is in place.
  • Part of Lindeman Pass is closed due to a major landslide below Gladstone lookout. Roberts Pass is closed due to rockfall and landslide hazards.
  • Six Foot track is affected by closures at Jenolan Caves.
  • Narrow Neck fire trail (from locked gate to clear hill) will be closed for roads maintenance from 6th January to 30th January 2025.  

Wentworth Falls and Woodford

  • Charles Darwin walk (part of Grand Cliff Top walk) is closed between Fletcher Street and Weeping Rock. Detours are in place to provide directions to Wentworth Falls picnic area. Visit the Blue Mountains City Council website for information.
  • Part of Undercliff track is closed between Fletchers lookout and Princes Rock lookout for track maintenance from Tuesday 19 November 2024. The track is expected to reopen on Friday 20 December 2024, depending on conditions.
  • Part of National Pass (west of Wentworth Falls middle crossing) is closed due to a major landslide and ongoing risks.
  • Wentworth Pass and Slack Stairs are closed due to multiple landslides. No access to Roberts Pass and Vera Falls. Valley of the Waters track is closed below Sylvia Falls.  

Blackheath, Mount Victoria and Bells Line of Road 

  • Evans Lookout Road will be closed beyond Grand Canyon carpark from 6am Tuesday 17th Dec to 6pm Thursday 19th Dec 2024 to allow for road works. There will be no vehicle or bicycle access to Evans Lookout during this time. Pedestrians can use the walking track to the lookout which begins at the Grand Canyon carpark toilets.
  • The Pulpit Rock Track and Popes Glen walking tracks will be closed between Boyds Beach and Popes Glen Creek (No access to these tracks from Govetts Leap) on Thursday 19th December 2024 to allow for helicopter operations.   
  • Govetts descent and Rodriguez Pass are closed due to rockfalls and landslides. The Grose Valley can be accessed from Perrys Lookdown. 
  • Pulpit Rock Reserve, lookouts and walking track are closed. For more information visit the Blue Mountains City Council website. Pulpit Rock walking track from Popes Glen is open as far as the NPWS boundary (as shown on Google maps).

Adventure recreation, canyons, abseiling and rock climbing

Other planned events: Notice of 1080 bait disposal pit

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is disposing of used 1080 baits and baiting products in an approved disposal pit on NPWS National Parks land within the Fitzroy Falls area.

The burial of used baits and products will occur from Thursday 12 December 2024 to Wednesday 11 June 2025. All bait material in the pit will be buried under at least 500mm of soil, and clear of waterways so as not to cause pollution of waterways. This is in accordance with the current Pesticide Control Order (1080 bait products).

There will be 1080 baiting signs at the entrance to the disposal pit site.

1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) is lethal to pets (including domestic dogs and cats) and working dogs. In the event of accidental poisoning, seek immediate veterinary assistance. Domestic pets, including dogs and cats, are not permitted in national parks or reserves.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is conducting a continual and ongoing 1080 ground baiting program for the control of foxes from Thursday 12 December 2024 to Wednesday 11 June 2025.

The program targets target foxes in the Carrington Falls, Budderoo Plateau, Knights Hill and Barren Grounds areas. Bait stations are located on NPWS estate and Crown road reserves with permissions. Both buried baits and Canid Pest Ejectors are used in this program.

The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, particularly the threatened species within these areas.

1080 baiting signs are at all entries to the baiting location. Don’t touch baits or ejector devices. 

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Safety alerts: Nigh time fox control operations

Please be aware night shooting and trapping of foxes may occur in the following beaches to protect nesting shorebirds:

  • Seven Mile Beach at Shoalhaven Heads (Seven Mile Beach National Park)
  • Comerong Island (Comerong Island Nature Reserve)

Fox control is undertaken by qualified shooters in accordance to shot plans between 10 December until 20 December 2024 to protect endangered nesting shorebirds.

Access tracks and beach entrances will be closed and signposted prior to shooting operations. Please look out for signage stating the beach is closed if accessing these beaches after dark.

Closed areas: Rhododendron Gardens Closed for night-time Ground Shooting Operations

The Rhododendron Gardens of the Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area will be closed during the hours of 6:00pm – 9:00am from Tuesday 17th December - Friday 20th December 2024 for ground shooting for feral animal control. The Rhododendron Gardens will be open to the public during normal visitation hours. 

This program will involve ground shooting of feral deer. It aims to reduce the significant impact they have on the Rhododendron Gardens as well as native plants and animals including threatened species. Other pest animals including foxes may also be targeted, if observed during the operations.

Ground Shooting will not take place during school holidays or on weekends or public holidays.

Park closure warning signs will be placed at entrances to the shooting area. Do not enter the closed area during shooting periods.

All access to the base of Belmore Falls is permanently closed as there is a risk of falling from the cliff edge and severe injury or death. This includes access from Hindmarsh and Belmore Falls lookouts and picnic areas.

Access is also closed to the top of Belmore Falls, including from the Belmore Falls Road causeway. 

There is limited mobile phone reception in this area. You may not be able to call for help if you need it and access for emergency services is difficult. 

The walk will remain permanently closed to the public to protect visitor safety.

Safety alerts: Potential difficulties for cyclists navigating Beehive Walking Track

Cyclists undertaking the Fitzroy Falls to Kangaroo Valley cycling route are advised that there may be difficulties riding Beehive Walking Track, which provides one of two access routes to Beehive Campground. The original track has been closed to vehicles with many large logs impeding access. Alternative riding access to Beehive Campground is possible via Jack's Corner Road and Beehive Point Road.

 

This closure only affects cyclists wishing to access Beehive Point Campground. Walkers are not impacted by this closure and cyclists may choose to walk the trail with their bikes, lifting them over logs when required.

Construction works have commenced on the first stage of the Illawarra Escarpment Mountain Bike Project at Kembla Heights. 

Construction is being carried out in accordance with rigorous environmental and cultural heritage planning approvals, the Illawarra Escarpment Mountain Bike Strategy and our Cycling Strategy.

People are reminded that the area is a closed construction site. Please stay off the tracks until they are opened in mid-2025 for your safety and to allow the network to be completed.

Notice of 1080 ground baiting program

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting ground baiting program from Monday 22 July 2024 to Friday 20 December 2024. The operation will use 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of foxes.

The program will take place in the following parks:

  • Seven Mile Beach National Park
  • Comerong Island Nature Reserve
  • Jervis Bay National Park

The program is designed to minimise predator impacts on wildlife, especially threatened species.

All baiting locations will be identifiable by signs.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW National Parks managed lands. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs must be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Closed areas: Camping areas closed due to flood and fire damage

Camping is closed indefinitely at the following campgrounds due to fire damage and flooding. The closed campground include (open for day-use only): 

  • Pauls Point
  • Sundeck 
  • Sawyers 
  • Burrawang

Please note that the campgrounds will remain open for day use. Some campgrounds may be affected by flood debris following heavy rain, and there may be steep sand walls to access sites.

Please be cautious and move onto another campground if safety issues occur. There have been many changes to campgrounds along the river, including reduced campground capacity. Some sites also have extensive regrowth following fires.
