Other planned events: Special Event Closure - Mount Grenfell Historic Site 20 Year Celebration Saturday 13th July 2024

Day use area closed - The Mount Grenfell Historic Site was handed back to the Ngiyampaa Wangaaypuwan Aboriginal owners in July 2004, and was leased back to the Minister under Part 4A of the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974 (NPW Act).

It is one of only seven reserves, managed as lands of cultural significance to Aboriginal people.

The Mount Grenfell Board of Management have invited community members to celebrate the 20-year anniversary, on Saturday 13th July, of this significant event, and the ongoing journey for Ngiyampaa People in reconnecting with Country, and in working with NPWS to care for it.

As a result of this important Ngiyampaa Wangaaypuwan special event, the Mount Grenfell Historic Site Day use area will be closed on Saturday 13th July, for the day of the special event.

Please review the event signage at the site, as traffic conditions will be changed for the day, and NPWS staff will be coordinating parking at the site.

Parking may be difficult at this time and may not be suitable for caravans and large vehicle traffic.

For more information, please contact the NPWS Central West Area office at Bathurst on 02 6332 7640 or email; npws.centralwest@environment.nsw.gov.au

Please plan your trip carefully and check livetracffic.com for any road closures in this area.

Other planned events: Ongoing Poison 1080 ground baiting program - controlling fox impacts for Biosecurity values.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will be conducting a ground baiting program using Canid Pest Ejectors (CPE) that contain 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison for the control of foxes.

The program will be ongoing between 17 March 2024 and 17 September 2024 along management trails in Tollingo Nature Reserve and Woggoon Nature Reserve.

Readily identifiable 1080 poison signs have been positioned at trail entry points or trail junctions throughout the reserve.

Domestic pets are not permitted in NSW national parks and reserves. Pets and working dogs may be affected (1080 is lethal to cats and dogs). Pets and working dogs should be restrained or muzzled in the vicinity and must not enter the baiting location. In the event of accidental poisoning seek immediate veterinary assistance.

Penalties apply for non-compliance. For further information please call the NPWS Bathurst area office on 02 6332 7640.

Fire bans: Park fire ban

There is a 'no solid fuel fire policy' in this park all year round. This park fire ban will remain in effect unless otherwise extended or removed. During park fire ban periods, all campfire and solid fuel (wood, heat beads, charcoal, briquettes, hexamite) barbecues and stoves are prohibited. Gas and electric barbecues and cookers are permitted as long as:

  • They're under direct control of an adult
  • The ground within 2m of the barbecue is cleared of all flammable materials
  • There's an adequate supply of water (minimum of a bucket)

If a Total Fire Ban is in place, please contact the local park office before using a gas and/or electric barbecue or cooker. Penalties apply for non-compliance. To find out more about fire bans in parks and reserves, including your responsibilities, visit NSW National Parks safety page.

Other incidents: Visitation restrictions

There are a number of restrictions on visitation and access by the general public to Yathong, Nombinnie and Round Hill Nature Reserves and Nombinnie State Conservation Area.

  • These reserves are not available for overnight camping or hiking. Visitation is restricted to day visits only.
  • Vehicle access is restricted to the public roads passing through or adjoining the reserves. Management trails are closed to vehicles. However you are welcome to walk on the trails.
  • Bird watchers are welcome to walk into the reserves and along management trails. However take care to make sure you can navigate back to your car - it is easy to get disorientated in mallee country.
  • Trips to Round Hill Nature Reserve by bird watching clubs can be done by prior arrangement.
  • There are a number of scientific research programs happening in the reserves and visitors should not disturb any field equipment if they come across it.
  • The reserves are closed periodically to allow management programs to be undertaken. Please check the website for closures prior to visits.
