Gardens of Stone State Conservation Area
What we're doing
Park management activities
Gardens of Stone State Conservation Area has management strategies in place to protect and conserve the values of this park. Visit the detailed park and fire management documents.
Preserving landscapes and geology
Gardens of Stone State Conservation Area protects a nationally significant landscape of ancient and rare pagoda rock formations, as well as deep gorges, slot canyons, caves, and hanging peat swamps. Many of these highlights are unique to the area and have informed planning and management to protect and enhance the landscape.
Managing weeds, pests and animals
NPWS has developed a targeted weed and pest management program to protect native species and prevent weeds from smothering native plants. Targeted weed management programs help to reduce emerging weeds, protect native vegetation, and improve biodiversity values of protected area, including threatened swamps.
Preserving biodiversity
The park protects 25 threatened plant species including the Newnes Plateau geebung that is only found on the Newnes Plateau. More than 80 rare and threatened species like koalas, spotted-tail quolls, regent honeyeaters and Blue Mountains water skinks also live in the area. Monitoring and management programs aim to improve understanding and management of sensitive areas.
Conserving Aboriginal culture
NPWS aims to conserve significant cultural places with guidance from the Traditional Custodians and the Aboriginal community. Ongoing research and maintenance of Aboriginal sites within the park is a priority. NPWS will also continue to work with the Aboriginal community to develop interpretive signage to spread awareness of cultural values.
Developing visitor facilities and experiences
NPWS is working to improve access to the park. Track and trail alignments will complement and expand on the range of walks and cycling loops in the area, establishing Lithgow as a key visitor hub where walkers and cyclists of all abilities can enjoy day trips and overnight stays on-park or in the region. This includes visitor infrastructure for people of all ages, fitness and levels of outdoor experience.
Some existing cycling and 4WD touring trails will be improved to form a network of touring routes that will include some highlights like Ben Bullen and Long Swamp.
