Gentle hills: The walk is mostly flat with gentle hills. There are some places with steeper slopes:

  • At the start of Lyrebird link track there's a ramp with handrails down to the rainforest floor, which is steeper than the rest of the track.
  • The section where Satinbird stroll leads to The Glade picnic area is moderately steep.

Quality of path

Formed track: The track varies from 1m to 2m wide, and is mostly sealed bitumen with some sections of fibre-reinforced plastic boardwalk and hard-packed ground. Crystal Showers Falls walk has a high quality surface suitable for prams and strollers with large wheels.

Steps

Occasional steps: Most of this track is step-free, but there are steps near Tristania Falls.

Accessible options

Wonga walk includes 4 walking tracks. Of these walks, only the Walk with the Birds boardwalk is wheelchair accessible. This section is a 0.56km loop that's 2m-wide and mostly bitumen seal, with a 200m elevated section of fibre-reinforced plastic boardwalk.

Getting there and parking

Wonga walk starts at the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre in the western precinct of Dorrigo National Park. To get there:

From Armidale:

  • Drive east along the Waterfall Way for approximately 90 minutes
  • Turn left into Dome Road approximately 2km after you pass through Dorrigo

From Coffs Harbour:

  • Travel south along the Pacific Highway
  • After crossing the Bellinger River, take the Waterfall Way exit to Dorrigo via Bellingen
  • Turn right at Dome Road and continue for approximately 1.6km to the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre.

Parking

Parking is available at Dorrigo Rainforest Centre, including several designated disabled spots.

There is also one accessible parking spot in a bitumen carpark at The Glade picnic area.

Best times to visit

The weather at Dorrigo National Park can vary from warm to mild to cool, depending on the time of year you visit. The summer months usually have the highest rainfall.

Wonga walk includes 4 walking tracks.

Only one of these walks, Walk with the Birds boardwalk, is suitable for wheelchair users, prams and people with reduced mobility. This section is a 2m-wide and mostly bitumen seal track, with a 200m elevated section of fibre-reinforced plastic boardwalk. There are rest points and no steps.

People with reduced mobility will need assistance along the other parts of Wonga walk:

  • Satinbird stroll is a 600m bitumen path with a steep section as it approaches the Glade picnic area
  • Lyrebird link track is a 1.5m to 2m-wide track with a moderately steep fibre-reinforced plastic ramp at the start of the walk as it descends to the rainforest floor. The large Baliminda Platform along the walk has 3 steps with a handrail that lead to its outer edge.
  • There are steps near Tristania Falls.

Prohibited

Drones

Flying a drone for recreational purposes is prohibited in this area. Drones may affect public enjoyment, safety and privacy, interfere with park operations, or pose a threat to wildlife. See the Drones in Parks policy.

Commercial filming and photography

Commercial filming or photography is prohibited without prior consent. You must apply for permission and contact the local office.
