Gradient
Short steep hills: The walk has some gentle slopes, mixed with several very steep sections including:
- The section of track leaving Canyon picnic area which is a steep 250m uphill
- The creek crossings which can be steep and uneven
Quality of path
Formed track, some obstacles: The main track surface is natural earth, which is loose and uneven along most of the walk.
Steps
Occasional steps:
- There's a steep and narrow staircase with a handrail as you leave Canyon picnic area and follow the creek.
- There's another steep and narrow staircase halfway along the walk.
- At the point where the track goes downhill, there are compacted gravel steps.
Other barriers
Pinch points: There's a point around halfway along the walk where the track narrows and there's a steep staircase.
Other barriers: There are obstacles along the track including tree roots and large loose rocks. There are also sections where the ground becomes more loose and uneven than along the rest of the walk.
These areas include:
- The start of the track after leaving Canyon picnic area
- The 2 creek bed crossings at the beginning and end of the track
- The section of the walk leading towards Camp Blackman
Getting there and parking
Wambelong Nature walking track starts from Canyon picnic area in the central precinct of Warrumbungle National Park. To get there:
- Travel along John Renshaw Parkway from Coonabarabran
- Upon entering the park, take the turn-off to the visitor centre.
- Continue along the road to Canyon picnic area

Parking is available at Canyon picnic area where this walk begins, including 1 accessible parking space.
Best times to visit
You may experience a great range of temperatures on any day in the park. In summer it's generally hot in the daytime and temperatures often exceed 30C. In contrast, winter can be very cold and the temperature drops below freezing at night. Rainfall is also highly variable, ranging from drought to prolonged wet periods. Less rain falls on the western side of the park than on the eastern side. It rains most from December to February and the annual average rainfall is 720mm. Thunderstorms are common in mid to late summer.
Spring
During early spring wildflowers are in bloom, including a huge variety of golden wattle flowers With a more moderate climate, spring is a great time to get out and camp under the stars .

There are many sections of the walk where people with reduced mobility may need assistance including:
- Several very steep sections
- Steep and narrow staircases, including 1 at the start of the walk and 1 midway through
- 2 steep and uneven creek bed crossings at the beginning and end of the track
- Obstacles along the track including tree roots and large loose rocks.
There's 1 bench seat for resting at the start of the walk as you leave Canyon picnic area and follow the creek.
