Formed track: The walk is a 1.2m-wide track that starts off as bitumen before becoming metal boardwalk for 160m, with a hard-packed ground section and a pedestrian bridge at the end of the walk.
Steps
No steps: There are no steps on the walk to the lookout area.
If you take the walk that goes beyond the lookout, there are:
- 12 steps with handrails on the metal boardwalk immediately after the lookout area.
- 51 log and hard-packed ground steps without handrails leading down towards the clearing where you can look up at Sawn Rocks.
Getting there and parking
Sawn Rocks picnic area is in the Sawn Rocks precinct of Mount Kaputar National Park.
To get there from Narrabri:
- Drive 3km north along the Newell Highway towards Moree, then turn right into Killarney Gap Road (Bingara Road).
- After about 35km, you'll see the Sawn Rocks turn-off on the right.
To get there from Bingara:
- Drive approximately 65km east along Killarney Gap Road
- You’ll see the Sawn Rocks turn-off on the left.
Parking
Parking is in a bitumen carpark at Sawn Rocks picnic area where this walk begins, including 1 accessible parking space.
It can be a busy place on the weekend, so parking might be limited.

The 750m walk to the lookout is accessible with assistance:
- The bitumen track is 1.2m-wide and step-free
- Assistance may be needed along the undulating sections for wheelchair users, prams and mobility scooters to prevent tipping.
- There are bench seats along the walk and at the lookout for resting.
- One accessible car spot and accessible toilets are available at Sawn Rocks picnic area, where the track starts.
The walk beyond the main lookout is challenging:
- The track after the lookout is metal boardwalk and then becomes hard-packed ground
- There are 12 steps with handrails on the boardwalk section and 51 steps without handrails at the end of the walk.
