Climbing Mount Kosciuszko is a bucket-list experience. At 2228m above sea level, it's Australia's highest mountain. While steep sections make it challenging, you don't need to be a mountaineer because you can walk right to the top. On a clear day your reward is a 360-degree outlook of endless mountains with views as far as Victoria and towards the NSW South Coast.
Kosciuszko National Park covers a large part of mainland Australia's only true alpine landscape. This includes Ramsar-listed Blue Lake, a rare type of glacial lake that's home to threatened species like mountain pygmy-possums and alpine tree frogs. It's also an important site for migratory birds.
Mountains bring the drama, but local plants bring the mountains to life. Snow gums are easy to spot with their twisted limbs. After the snow melts, the landscape is coloured with wildflowers like snow daisies, yellow billy buttons, and the anemone buttercup, found only in Kosciuszko National Park.
Cross the fabled Snowy River and rest your legs at historic Seamans Hut, perched on top of Etheridge Range. This walk immerses you in nature and surprises with landmark sites along the way.
Snowies Alpine Walk connects alpine villages at Guthega, Perisher Valley and Charlotte Pass. Experience the quiet charm of these mountain hubs that slow down to a peaceful pace in the summer months.
