The reserve is in Darkinjung Country, near Wyong in the Central Coast region of NSW. The north boundary of the reserve adjoins Olney State Forest. The reserve protects bushland near the head of the Wyong Creek catchment.

The terrain is rugged and high in biodiversity. The ridges and gullies provide habitat for several threatened species including yellow-bellied gliders, spotted-tailed quolls, eastern pygmy possums and gang gang cockatoos. The small-fruited grey gum is an important food source for koalas in this area.

Kuluwan is a Darkinjung word meaning koala. Aboriginal culture in the reserve is still largely unrecorded and engaging with traditional custodians is an important part of managing the reserve. Many plant and animal species found in the reserve have great significance to Aboriginal communities as totem species or bush tucker.

About flora reserves

Flora reserves were established under the Forestry Act 2012 and remain State Forest. Under a unique management arrangement, this land is managed by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service. This ensures management is consistent with the adjoining national parks.
