Located near Kempsey, the reserve lies in Gumbaynggirr Country on escarpment landscape to the east of the New England Tablelands.

Kilprotay Flora Reserve shares boundaries with Gumbaynggirr National Park and Thumb Creek State Forest. It's part a vast natural landscape dominated by eucalyptus forest in the northern gorge country of the Great Dividing Range.

Kilprotay Flora Reserve extends the protection of important east-to-west habitat corridors for wildlife. In the east are Gumbaynggirr State Conservation Area and Gumbaynggirr and Dunggir national parks. To the west is the World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforest located in and around the wilderness of New England National Park.

The wider landscape surrounding Kilprotay Flora Reserve is wild and natural, and receives the highest level of conservation protection. These protected lands range from low to high elevations and support a wide variety of plant life. Their diverse habitats are home to a rich suite of native animals, especially tree-dwelling mammals and birds.

About flora reserves

Flora reserves were established under the Forestry Act 2012 and remain State Forest. Under a unique management arrangement, this land is managed by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service. This ensures management is consistent with the adjoining national parks.
