Overview

Tackle the spectacular Light to Light walk, which stretches 30km between Green Cape Lightstation and Boyds Tower in Beowa National Park on the far south coast. Spot kangaroos, wallabies, lyrebirds, wombats, possums and kookaburras and watch whales gliding past on their annual winter migrations. You can walk in either direction and enjoy the walk on shorter sections. Or hike the full trail over two days, sleeping in quiet campsites at Saltwater Creek or Bittangabee Bay.

Wherever you walk, make sure you’re well-prepared, with comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, a map and plenty of water. For longer walks, you might also prefer to join a group with a professional guide. This walk is located in the southern section of Beowa National Park and can be started from either end of the 31km trek – Boyds Tower or Green Cape Lightstation.

There are two campgrounds with facilities along the trail: Saltwater Creek and Bittangabee Bay. There is also accommodation at the Green Cape Lightstation Keepers’ Cottage.

Getting there:

  • Eden is approximately 6 hours drive south of Sydney. From Melbourne, it’s a 5½ hour drive to Edrom Road, which then takes you to either end of the trek.
  • For weather forecasts in the area, please visit the Bureau of Meteorology website.

Day 1: Hop to it

It’s a full day, 17.5km hike from Green Cape Lightstation to the Saltwater Creek campground. Head into dense tea-tree scrub, past Bittangabee campground and along sheltered Bittangabee Bay, where the Green Cape Lightstation keepers once stored their supplies. Say hello to the mobs of eastern grey kangaroos who gather at dusk, before setting up camp behind the powder-white beach at Saltwater Creek.

Day 2: Start your own off-road adventure

Rise early and continue north through the fast-changing vegetation – waist-high heath and scrub followed by lush green rainforest. The walk round the headlands to Mowarry Point is so picturesque; keep an eye out for the medieval-style turrets of Boyds Tower in the distance. Make sure you pack your swimmers for a swim in pretty Leatherjacket Bay, before continuing the climb to Boyds Tower, built by Ben Boyd in 1847.
