Step back in time in the historic village of Hartley on the western edge of the Blue Mountains. Enjoy a coffee at Postmistress Cafe and Store before working your way through Talisman Gallery and Corneys Garage, an antique shop built of timber and iron in 1945.
The lovely sandstone buildings here preserve an important piece of history: the settlement of inland Australia. Each of the 17 buildings tells the story of the village, from the 1837 Greek Revival courthouse to the Hartley Historic Site Visitor Centre, previously The Farmers Inn. Chat with our visitor centre staff to find out more about the region’s past, and explore the artefacts and family histories.
Hartley village is set among pastures, orchards, and nineteenth and twentieth-century cottage gardens which makes it a serene and picturesque location to stay overnight, or host a special event in one of the buildings for hire.
If you're on a road trip you might like to stretch your legs with a couple of short walks including one behind the visitor centre up to a granite rock outcrop named Kew-Y-Ahn which holds great significance to the local Aboriginal community. With dreamy views over the valley and rolling hills it's a great spot for a picnic. Dogs are also permitted in Hartley Historic village but must be held on a lead at all times.
In recognition of Hartley’s heritage significance there are a number of fascinating tours and events so call ahead to make a booking.
